Biography

Born in 1977, Vincent Dubourg is a French artist whose work blurs the distinction between art, design and furniture making. He studied applied arts and industrial design before going on to study furniture design at the École des Beaux Arts, Paris.

Dubourg’s sculptural furniture makes contemporary allusions to traditional methods of cabinetmaking. He poetically fuses the crafts of glassblowing, wood-bending, and metal-casting to bring simple forms to life. His conceptual twists and unique approach to materials evoke a sense of surrealism.

Dubourg describes his pieces as a fusion of furniture, architecture and sculpture. His mastery is revealed in the strength of his metalwork and his extensive knowledge of the properties of metal. He has also collaborated with metal foundries, such as Bonvicini in Verona, which has enhanced the technicality of his work as well expanding his creative scope.

His designs often draw on nature for inspiration – Napoleon A Trottinette features a vintage style bureau wrapped with elegant bronze branches that twirl around it, reaching upwards as if they had grown organically. His most recent designs, on the other hand, capture a more brutalist and industrial energy. The Insideer bureaus demonstrate a turn away from natural formation towards geometric structures, however they retain the delicacy and attention to detail of his earlier work.

Present in Dubourg’s oeuvre is an emotive explosivity. His works express raw emotion despite the use of a limited colour palette; instead of colour Dubourg uses form, letting the lines and shapes of his pieces communicate. The Inner Vortex series attests to his deconstructivist spirit, as pieces of table seem to have been frozen mid-explosion. According to Dubourg the “collection is animated by a discreet movement, delicate pigmentation, and a breath of life.”

Dubourg has exhibited his works at fairs across the world. He has twice exhibited at Design Miami/Basel and has shown his designs at Design Days Dubai and Zona Maco in Mexico.
